Congratulations to Steve Speer and Ross Dyer, Re-Elected Directors of the SSWSC!
Steve Speer
Steve graduated from Washington State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and moved to Colorado in 1982. He was employed with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. from 1982-2011, serving as Vice President and a member of its Board of Directors from 2003-2011. Steve ran the Mid-Atlantic Region in Washington D.C. for Hensel Phelps and oversaw the renovation of the Pentagon after 911. During his years at Hensel Phelps, he and his family always maintained a residence in Colorado and skied in Steamboat. Steve retired from Hensel Phelps in 2011 and he and his wife, Karen, moved full-time to Steamboat Springs with their 2 daughters.
Having been a principal owner of one of the largest U.S. contractors, Steve brings technical and management skills to assist in the growth and promotion of SSWSC as a premier program in the U.S. Steve’s youngest daughter was active in the SSWSC for 5 years. Steve has donated time and expertise to the SSWSC. Steve has served on the SSWSC board of directors for the past 6 years. He and his wife, Karen, were Co-Chairs and key supporters of the Creating Champions Campaign and Steve represented the SSWSC and worked hand-in-hand with Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. throughout the entire construction of the project. Steve respects the tradition and values the SSWSC offers to children of our community and is motivated to keep this tradition and the club’s programs moving forward in a positive direction for future generations. Steve is very active in snow skiing, waterskiing, bicycling, golf and is also a private pilot.
Ross Dyer
Ross Dyer has been active with the Club since his children first joined as athletes in 2001 and was subsequently elected to the Board of Directors in 2014. He has been serving as Treasurer and is a member of the Executive Committee.
Ross originally joined the Board to provide support to the Club and to ensure that it continues to be a positive force for member families and the entire Steamboat Springs community. During his tenure on the Board, the Club has grown from serving 1,181 athletes (winter/summer combined) to 1,448 and scholarship grants have increased by 138%. Ross deeply believes in the Club’s mission and its role in the community and would like to continue to serve on the Board.
Ross’s background has been a great fit for the Board and the Club. His professional career has been spent in the marketing services industry as an employee, consultant, and business owner. Clients ranged from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups to non-profits from industries such as health care, financial services, technology, resort and real estate. Currently, Ross is enjoying consulting part-time and working a few days a week at Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare and the Hayden airport.
On a personal note, Ross’ three children grew up in the Club’s Freestyle and Freeskiing programs. His oldest, Ryan, was a 6-year member of the US Ski Team and is now completing his college degree. His daughter, Shelby, works in the industry for Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and his youngest son, Ethan, is in Bozeman, MT skiing as much as possible. The success that all three have had is largely a reflection of the discipline, goal setting, patience, and support they received from their coaches and fellow athletes.
Ross believes the Club is a tremendous asset to Steamboat Springs and considers it an honor to serve on the Board of such a great organization.
