SSWSC Summer Registration and Programs and Update
The SSWSC staff has been hard at work this winter finalizing summer 2022 programs. We plan to post all summer programs and camps on the website on April 1, and registration will open on Thursday, April 27. We have made a number of changes that should make it easier for your children to participate in some great programs this summer!
NEW Three Week Summer Sessions: Summer programs for ages U14 and younger will be offered in 3-week sessions throughout the summer that will be the same for all disciplines, June 13-July 1, July 11-29 and August 1-19. This change has been made for these reasons:
- Broad sport sampling (trying different sports) at these ages is a fundamental of long-term athlete development, where kids play multiple sports throughout the course of the year to develop the broad base of skills and find the sports they have a passion for. The new block schedule gives kids the opportunity to participate in multiple sports in the summer, taking advantage of everything the SSWSC and other sport programs in our community have to offer. For example, a ten year old could do a three week block of youth mountain bike, followed by three weeks of skateboarding, then three weeks of FunFit strength and conditioning without these program schedules conflicting or overlapping. We have also aligned schedules to allow kids to enroll in two programs during the same three-week block, for example youth mountain biking and U10 jump/nordic combined days do not overlap.
- SSWSC summer programs have received more and more interest, with waitlists in many programs. Breaking programs into more sessions will provide opportunities for more kids in our community to participate.
- The block schedule allows for consistent breaks for SSWSC staff and members to create windows for family trips or time to participate in other camps or programs outside the SSWSC.
- It is still possible to enroll for the full summer in a single program by registering for all three three-week sessions, however, the session format allows for greater flexibility.
Priority Enrollment Date: Registration opens at 12:00 noon on April 27 for families who have previously been enrolled in a SSWSC summer or winter program, and 12:00 noon on April 28 for new families. We hope that priority registration will provide returning families a better opportunity to continue in their program of choice or to enroll in programs that they missed out on due to over-enrollment last year.
Steamboat High School Summer PE: Steamboat Springs High School has made a change to their PE requirement that will come into effect with the class of 2024 (this will not apply to the class of 2023). The high school’s PE requirement will be reduced to 0.5 credits (one semester) next year, and an SSWSC summer strength and conditioning program will no longer be accepted to satisfy this credit. In the future, the .5 PE course must be taken through the high school. Students who will be graduating in 2023 and who have not enrolled in the SSWSC summer PE credit program will still be able to do so this summer and get a .5 credit, and students who have already fulfilled their PE requirement with a summer S&C credit through the SSWSC will keep the credit they have earned. For more specific information, students should contact their guidance counselor.
FunFit and Fundamentals of Strength and Conditioning Fee: Fees for Fundamentals of Strength and Conditioning and FunFit programs will no longer be applied as a deposit toward winter competitive programs. These programs are high quality and have been well-received and will have a specific fee to cover the cost of the program only. Both of these programs had waitlists last year and we have added coaches to be able to provide high quality strength and conditioning programs for this age and to make sure we provide the opportunity for more kids to join.
Summer Program Refund Deadline: For specific programs that have very high demand, refunds will not be provided for cancellations after May 15: Youth Mountain Bike, FunFit, Fundamentals of Strength and Conditioning, Skateboarding, Trampoline, Intro to Ramping. Please only register for these programs if you are confident your child will be able to attend.
