SSWSC U14/U16 Athletes Attend RMD Olympic Training Center Dryland Camp 9/15-9/17
This weekend six of our Steamboat U16/U14 had the opportunity to attend the Rocky Mountain Division dryland training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. It was an inspiring weekend for all who attended. The athletes had three days of intense physical training, nutrition education, goalsetting sessions and a chance to speak to Rio Olympian pole vaulter Cale Simmons.
We arrived Friday afternoon to beautiful weather and an incredible view of Pikes Peak. After settling into our rooms and a brief introduction, we split into two groups. Half of the group had a hands-on Nutritional workshop. They learned how to make smoothies and had a healthy snack while the other group worked out in the field with a focus on core strength and flexibility. After a delicious dinner at the same cafeteria where real Olympians and Paralympians ate with us side by side, Darlene Nolting led an inspirational presentation on positive self-talk and teamwork. By 9:30 an exhausted group of athletes were in their beds with lights out.
On Saturday we met at 7 am for a breakfast feast, followed by a light workout before the real testing began. We split into four groups and rotated between the dreaded “beep test” which our Athletes pushed themselves beyond the limits they believed they were capable of, and put up some impressive numbers. Another group was treated to a weightlifting clinic run by the National Strength and Conditioning staff. The groups continued to rotate through a games station and an agility workout. After lunch, we continued our SkillsQuest testing, where again, our athletes impressed everyone with their tremendous effort. That evening we were privileged to hear Rio Olympian, and Air Force member Cale Simmons speak about his experience as an Olympic Athlete. The presentation ended with a Q&A session with some excellent questions from the kids, such as “have you ever fallen on the pole?”, and “what types of workouts do you do?”
The final day included a brutal stair running workout after breakfast followed by a goal setting session with the kids. We then had our last meal at the OTC. The crowd favorite seemed to be the unlimited ice cream. Overall it was an incredible weekend and the athletes learned to push themselves and strive for excellence.
