Cycling
The High School MTB team had their 3rd race in Granby the past Saturday. The weather was perfect for most of the day, cool and clear. The trails were dry and dusty for the 5 mile loop. JV raced first completing 3 laps through the golden aspens and powdery trails. Chase High and Bennett Gamber both had amazing races finishing 17 and 19. Matthew Kempers was close on their heels in 25. Dane Freckleton joined us fresh off the Enduro Race series as well. Freshman boys raced two laps on the course. Cam Owens, a recent transplant from Michigan who boards at Steamboat Mountain School, had an amazing race starting in the B wave due to cumulative points and missing the first race of the season. Cam landed on the top of the podium much to the shock of his competitors. His second lap time rivaled the Varsity riders lap times. Luckily, he will now start in the A wave and won’t have to pass 81 riders like in Granby. Alden Wade and Daniel Kempers finished in 14 and 18 out of 124 riders. Louis Bartel, Derek Pettigrew and Johnny Duty had strong rides finishing 21, 25, 37. The course continued to get dustier with powdery ruts for Forrest Christian (52), Gunnar Gilbertson (63), Dylan Kuntz (77), Kai Scott (95), Teale Carlsson (115) and Aaron Peterson (116).
Varsity boys riders had a dirty ride. Ethan Moyer came in second place and congratulated Ethan Wright from East High School for his amazing 3rd and 4th laps. Trey Seymour fought through 2 flat tires to finish 18. Sven Tate was on fire his last lap passing 5-6 competitors and finishing with his fastest lap time on his 4th lap coming in at 21st. Elijah Vargas, John Foster and Chase Seymour continue to ride themselves into shape finishing in a pack 29, 31, 32. Our solo Sophomore racer, Jack Reich continued to finish strong in 46th.
But then came the Girls race. At 2pm the clouds rolled in and the sprinkles started. After one lap the course had turned from powdery dust to full on mud. The girls struggled to pedal their bikes, having to stop and use sticks to clear the mud from their drivetrains. Not only was it pouring rain, but the temperature was about 32 degrees. They League ended up evacuating the course and having riders take roads down to the finish. The ladies came in muddy and freezing cold. Varsity rider, Margaret Dickson ended up 14th. JV rider Reilly Mewborn finished 12th. Emi Cooper and Eliza Fox gritted through the weather finishing 1st and 3rd overall. Elena Wittemyer ditched her bike and opted for a car ride back to the base with 4 other riders ending up in the Medical tent with blankets and hot water bottles. Adventurous and gnarly were the words that described their race experience. Everyone was able to get a hot shower and dry clothes before traveling back home to Steamboat.
