Alpine:
Congratulations to the 11 SSWSC alpine and freestyle Colorado Ski Country USA All-Star athletes who received All-Star passes to ski Colorado’s resorts free this winter! One of the great benefits of this program is it gives these skiers more chances to train on all the great venues across the state and with different competitive peer groups. Thanks CSCUSA!

Alpine Competition Volunteers: Please note that you can take your Competition Officials clinic anytime online. It is a prerequisite for further certifications.
There will be a Referee Clinic held here in the Fireplace room on Wednesday, November 8 from 1-7:30 PM. Referee certification affords the opportunity to work in more skilled positions and earn more worker credits.
Cycling:
The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team finished up their season qualifying 20 athletes for the State Championships in Eagle, CO. The team pre-rode the course on Saturday afternoon then went to the end of season BBQ & Awards Ceremony. Ethan Moyer received the Exceptional Rider Award for the entire state. Ethan is a legacy rider, competing all 4 years in the CO League. He started his freshman year with dreadlocks, lack of academic focus and strong quads. Cycling quickly became his passion and changed his life. His grades improved, he plays in the jazz band at the high school, competed in State Science Olympiad for robotics and became uber focused on cycling. Ethan currently is a senior with straight A’s, the North Conference Champion and 5th in the State. On Sunday, all eyes were on him. He had a good race, just not great. He came across the line in 5th place, a place on the podium, but maybe not as high as he had hoped. With grace and no excuses, Ethan admitted that right off the line his legs felt flat and he hoped to ride them into feeling good…it just didn’t happen. The competition in Colorado in the Varsity division of the High School League is no joke. These athletes are extremely serious, focused and really fast! We are so proud and honored to have Ethan on our team and will miss him next season as he follows his dream of being a World Cup cyclist.
The highlight of the day happened early on in 28 degree weather. Freshman Cam Owens took the lead immediately and just extended it during the 2 lap race. He became the 2017 Freshman State Champion winning by more than a minute. Daniel Kempers had the best race of his season placing 16th. Louis Bartels started in the second wave of 50 riders and looked like a rocket shot him out of a cannon. He started 58 and finished 32, an impressive improvement for the State Championships. The ladies took off next with temperature in the 30’s. Emi Cooper, Freshman North Leader continued her fierce competitive nature and finished 2nd. Eliza Fox close on her heels finishing 12th. Matthew Kempers brought his game face to the race on Sunday as well as his huge quads and powered to 15th overall in the State.
Overall the Steamboat Team placed 4th in the state for Division 1 teams which is a huge accomplishment with only 20 athletes.
