High School Mountain Bike Team

The Steamboat High School MTB team just returned from State Championships in Durango, CO and we brought home the JV Colorado State Champion, Cam Owens!
Cam was the Freshman State Champion last year and was moved up to compete JV this season. He has earned his spot in Varsity for next season, a small and select group of elite riders that only 10% achieve. He raced with the pack for 2 laps and waited until the last half of the 3rd lap to make his move. Cam surged away with the other racers not being able to answer his power and endurance. He completed his race in 1 hour 23 min 16 sec, finishing 37 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Other JV riders included Alden Wade who placed 19th and Daniel Kempers placing 40th out of 159 riders. Exceptional results.

The Colorado High School League encompasses 67 schools in Colorado, WY and New Mexico and has 1200+ riders that compete at 4 races and State Championships if they qualify. Many of the Colorado League riders continue their cycling careers far past college into the professional ranks, winning national and world titles. Out of 30 team members, 18 riders competed in at least 3 conference races (the minimum requirement) and all 18 qualified for State Champs. One rider had a dual sport conflict and choose to waive his nomination. Of the 17 riders from Steamboat, 11 either improved or held their start position.
Liesel Wilkinson, Freshman, had a large improvement moving up 20 spots to finish 35th. Many of the Sophomore Boys had impressive move ups in placement; Louis Bartels – 32 spots improvement , Gunnar Gilbertson – 26 spots, Jaxson Fryer – 25 spots, Dylan Kuntz – 21 spots . Max Hamilton fought a tough race and became unclipped from the pedal in the final sprint losing 4 spots finishing 21st out of 150 racers.
Legacy Rider and Senior, Reilly Mewborn fought hard and had one of her best finishes of the season placing 19 in a field of 85 amazing female riders. She was the rock of the team all season, often leading a group in practice, guiding the underclassman and demonstrating what it looks like to train hard and embodying what it means to be a student athlete. She has missed only one day of training since August and is taking a full load of hard sciences her senior year of high school.

Sophomore Girl, Rose Epstein had the best race of her young cycling career. She raced smart, not blowing herself up on the first lap and continuously pecked away at her competitors to move up to 18th. Ryley Seibel unfortunately struggled with chain problems and at one point had to run with her bike in order to get help showing her try passion and grit for competing.

The highlight of the weekend was the League Awards on Saturday night. The Steamboat Team received the “North All-Star Team” Award. This acknowledges a team that displays exceptional leadership skills, extraordinary sportsmanship, a commitment to their coaches, student-athletes and volunteers, provides service to their community and consistently goes above and beyond assisting with race production. It was an honor to receive this award. Our team has great spirit and passion and very supportive parents and community members.
