C.U. Invitational/ Rocky Mountain Nordic JNQ Cross Country Races
Howelsen Nordic Trails
January 18th+19th 2020

SSWSC XC Athletes dominate on Howelsen Trails. University of Utah skiers are also very impressive. Having put many hours of cross country ski training on the Howelsen Nordic trail network was a noticeable advantage for SSWSC XC racers. In Saturday’s Freestyle race the SSWSC XC U12 Girls swept the podium and had 4 out of the top 5, in a dominating performance, with Tig Loomis taking the win. Shea Sias in 2nd. Shea Rossi in 3rd.This trend would show up in other age group races. U20 SSWSC XC athlete Cooper Jones, took second in the RMN male 10k Freestyle. Sidney Barbier finished third in the U18/20 female race, her first trip to the podium. Griff Rillos has won every RMN race he has participated in by healthy margins and the U16 boys 5k Freestyle Race was no exception, as he won handily. His teammate, Grey Barbier, racing up an age group, took an impressive 3rd place. On the U16 girl’s side, SSWSC XC athletes, Grace Zanni and Ellery Hodges, went 2nd and 3rd in their 5k race. U14 Henry Magill skied to a solid 4th place in the 2.5k boy’s race. Nikita Andre raced well to finish 6th in the U14 girl’s race. Tristan Thrasher put on an impressive performance grabbing the U12 boy’s title. U10 boy, Sawyer Lander took the win and U10 girl, Georgia Bishop finished 4th.

In the NCAA races, University of Utah displayed dominance. Samuel Hendry won. Maximillian Bye was second. And Luke Jager was 3rd. All University of Utah athletes. The race was won by Stratton Mountain School T2 athlete Kyle Bratrud, a senior. He was fresh off a National Championship victory in a 15k skate race in Houghton, MI. Kyle graduated from Northern Michigan University two years ago, so his result was taken out of the NCAA results.

The second day of competition was a Mass Start Classic Race. Both SSWSC XC and University of Utah were again dominate. SSWSC XC athletes Cooper Jones and Chase High placed 3rd and 4th in the RMN 10k. Sidney Barbier moved up a step on the podium, finishing 2nd in the U18/20 10k girl’s race. Griff Rillos remained undefeated, taking the win in the U16 boy’s 5k. Grey Barbier, again took 3rd place in the U16 boy’s race. Ellery Hodges moved up to 2nd place in the RMN U16 girl’s 5k. Charley Lodwick had a season best, 4th place in the U16 girl’s race. Henry Magill continued his consistent racing, taking 4th place in the U14 boy’s 2.5k race. Nikita Andre skied to an impressive 4th place in the U14 girl’s 2.5k race. Tristan Thrasher gained a hard earned 2nd place in the U12 boy’s 2,5k race. The U12 girls again stacked the top five in their 2.5k race, with Tig Loomis gliding to victory. Sawyer Lander went two for two, winning the U10 boy’s 1.5k. Georgia Bishop added to the SSWSC XC medal count, winning the U10 girl’s race.

Last weekend we hosted the U10/U12 Skills Festival. Saturday U10 and U12 athletes from around the region participated in Duals as well as fun stations that Howelsen has to offer – airbag, Nordic jumps and a speed trap down the HS 45. This is such a unique event for kids this age allowing them to explore so many different types of venues. Sunday kids were split into mixed club groups and half the day was spent free skiing all over the mountain while the other half of day athletes were assessed on 4 different skills. This was an opportunity to meet new kids, ski a new mountain for the out of towners and have a base skill assessment of the four fundamental skills, balance, pressure, rotary and edging.

U10 Athletes with Alex Shorter worked on two of our core values: Teamwork and Fun! Great job!

The White Pickles learned the following skills this week:

Balance through Body Position - Keep hands forward I like them to imagine holding a big beach ball.  We also did a lot of popping up on our skis standing in place to ensure proper stance.  In addition moving down the mountain pretending there is hot lava under our feet helps with shifting weight and finding that sweet spot.
Pressure Control - There is no pressure on the skis while in the air
Extension and Flexion - using absorption upon landing by flexing ankles, knees, and hips - with hands forward - looking ahead and popping at the top of the jump.
Reading Terrain - knowing how to go fast down the in ramp in order to have speed to make it up the jump - this is a work in progress we had a few traffic jams
Safety Awareness- Read the landing - space out the jumpers - do not take the jump if your team mate is in a pile on the jump - or if it is on the other side of the run again a work in progress as they are still learning to be aware of their surroundings.

Team Powder Bear continued their adventures last week.  Griffin Park filled in and added his experience as junior coach.  All the kids did well.  Everyone worked on jumping or getting some minor air.

Last week, we skied 3,677 vertical feet over 6.4 miles of trail and 6 different trails! We are getting much better at our safety stops.  We also worked on trail manners: skiing on only part of the trail when others are around, stopping in safe spots (the sides or below signs), looking around for others,  giving others space, and looking up hill when we meet another trail or come out of the trees.
