Cross Country
In his first year eligible for the Junior World Championships, 18-year-old cross country skier Wally Magill was named to the Junior World Team. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athlete is one of six male team members bound for the 2021 U23 and Junior FIS Cross Country World Championships in early February in Vuokatti, Finland, according to a news release from U.S. Ski and Snowboard.
Waverly Gebhardt was also named as first alternate in the event that somebody is unable to attend. Gebhardt will go to Finland, too, if one of the six females ahead of her is unable to compete. She also was first alternate last year, narrowly missing out on a spot by one place in the qualifiers. The previous year, she competed at Junior Worlds.

Snowboarding
Jesse Hamric, Izzy Hamric, Reed Van Ness and Cooper Malia tuned up their contest riding with the first USASA Slopestyle event of the year. A great course and even better morning conditions at Aspen Snowmass gave these 4 athletes a chance to dial in their runs and feel out what pandemic life contests will be like. Jesse Hamric finished 1st in the boys “Youth” age group (15-16), Izzy Hamric finished 1st in the girls “Breaker” age group (13-14). Reed Van Ness finished 4th and Cooper Malia finished 6th in a very competitive boys “Menehune” age group (11-12). Special thanks to Aspen Valley Snowboard Club for an awesome event.
