Nordic Combined
Two groups of SSWSC Nordic Combined athletes traveled to Europe this month. Coach Karl Denney traveled with the USA Nordic Junior National Team which is composed of 8 athletes, half of which are from SSWSC! Bennett Gamber, Canden Wilkinson, Niklas Malacinski, and Erik Belshaw traveled with Karl and Tomas Matura, the head coach for the National B-Team. The crew enjoyed 21 days of training at 3 different venues including Lomnice, CZE; Liberec, CZE; and Eisenerz, AUT. They competed once a week against the Czech National Development Team and the American National B-Team.
Coach Garrett Fisk took 4 SSWSC athletes and 3 other American junior athletes on a separate trip that toured through Planica, SLO; then joined up with Coach Karl’s crew for a week of training in Eisenerz , AUT. They went on to compete in the FIS Youth Cup in Oberstdorf, GER. This event provided the young athletes with a new perspective on the high level of competition among their European counterparts. The athletes had a remarkable time and trained in many different venues that offered different cultural perspectives and training techniques.
Meanwhile at nearby venue in Oberwiesenthal (GER), Tara Geraghty-Moats of Lake Placid, New York won the first-ever FIS Women’s NC Grand Prix! This is huge news for young female athletes; FIS has identified Women’s Nordic Combined as a developing sport with big international potential! Coming up in December in Steamboat Springs, the Nordic Combined Continental Cup, an international competition one level below the World Cups, will for the first time feature female Nordic Combined athletes! Keep an eye out for our local girls to take their first steps into the international spotlight!
