Alpine First Year FIS Racers Turn Heads

The first speed races of the season at Copper Mountain on December 2 and 3 were the first internationally sanctioned super G races ever for several of the club’s 16 year olds and they were not fazed. Racing against a handful of World Cup skiers on the U.S. Ski Team speed venue, Cooper Puckett cracked the top ten in the second race (from a start position in the 50’s!) and was the fastest U19. In fact, he finished just two seconds off the pace of Pavel Trikhichev, who went on three days later to finish just ahead of Steven Nyman and Ted Ligety in the Birds of Prey World Cup Super G. Jordan Simon was just five spots back and was the next fastest 16 year old. The coaches praised Scottie Bocock, who was the first SSWSC skier to race and finished 18th with a costly mistake, for providing a great course report back to the start that helped his teammates have success. Noah Riemenschneider was also top 20 with a 16th place result.

For the women, 16 year olds Ryli Adrian and Riley Grosdidier led the team in the first and second race, respectively. Ryli was the 8th fastest U19 and 17th overall in the first race. Riley did one better in the 2nd race, finishing 7th fastest for U19’s and 16th overall. Helenka Ostaszewski and Seqouia Anstine skied into the top 20 in both races, showing some nice consistency to start the season.

These early races were a good chance for SSWSC racers to get some speed practice that will help them in their upcoming GS starts at Beaver Creek, Aspen and Vail, or Nakiska for some.
