Snowboarding

Last weekend the third stop of the Race to the Cup North America tour came to our home hill with SSWSC hosting the event as well as a USASA race Friday night. Winter sports club athletes dominated both events and filling a lot of spots in the brackets for finals. Robby Burns got his first ever win in PGS at the Nor-ams with Olivier Vachon in 3rd and Steve MacCutcheon in fourth. On Sunday Robby placed 2nd in PSL, Billy Winters with his first Nor-am podium in 3rd and Mike Trapp in 4th.

Then this Saturday at Rogla Slovenia a large group of SSWSC riders competed in the World Cup PGS with Ester Ledecka once again claiming victory with her teammate Ekaterina Tudegesheva sharing the podium in third. Unfortunately on the men’s side none of our riders made finals but Justin Reiter was 22nd and AJ Muss in 27th continuing his strong performance in his first year at the World Cup, Mike Trapp was 29th, and  Robby Burns in 43rd next to Converse Fields in 44th.

Freeskiing

The SSWSC Freeskiing team sent a couple of athletes to Breckenridge this weekend to compete in a Rocky Mountain Series Halfpipe event. Liam Baxter took 2nd in the Skier Men 13 -15  landing his first cork 9s in competition.  Cale McCarthy took 8th in the skier boys 10-12 landing both runs, and really working too gain some comfort in the 22ft pipe of Breckenridge.

This Friday and Saturday the 29th and 30th The SSWSC and Steamboat Resort will be welcoming hosting the first Local IFSA Big Mountain Event we have had here in Steamboat.  We have a full Start list with 105 local and visiting skiers and riders from Colorado and Utah. The event will be taking place in Chute One on Saturday the 30th starting at 10:00am and running into the afternoon.  Awards are scheduled to be in Gondola Square at 3:30pm.

This is an exciting event for us at the SSWSC as it is the first of its kind that we have hosted here in Steamboat. Athletes are given a starting point at the top of Chute One, and are challenged with finding the most creative and fluid way down.  The are scored in the following categories,  Line Choice, Control, Fluidity,  Technique, and Style.    Big Mountain Skiing and riding is growing fast here in the club and is the newest offering for the SSWSC Freeskiing Team. Our athletes have been traveling to IFSA Competitions for two years now, and they are excited to show home what they have been doing.

Alpine

U19

After a pretty successful trip to Aspen, the U19/PG group headed to Vail for 2 U19 GS qualifier races. We started off the series with a bang with Patrick Gruber (U21) winning the men’s GS race the first day. But not everyone can win and we had some solid results following Patrick…

Day 1, Jett Seymour finished 10th overall for the men (6th for R/C U19’s), while Lauren Chavez was 8th overall for women (7th for R/C U19’s).

Day 2, after some challenging courses and a handful of DNF’s, Jett Seymour finished 15th overall for the men (7th for R/C U19’s) and Lauren Chavez and Ellese Lupori finished 6th and 7th overall for the women respectively (4th and 5th for R/C U19’s).

All results from Vail can be found HERE.

Next up, the majority of the group will be heading to La Crosse, WI for 3 U19 SL qualifier races which will complete the qualifying process for the U19 National Championships. Wish of luck!!

CU Invitational

This weekend during the CU Invitational, the Alpine NCAA racers gave “All Out” the first inaugural test run for the NCAA Championships in March. Each unit, including Nordic, has a weekend of racing in their own local region, making up the circuit. This weekend served as a test run for all racers for their Championships and served as a race to qualify for March’s championships. From the SSWSC staff, almost all of our alpine coaches and our tele coaches raced in the NCAA’s when they were younger and enjoyed helping set up the event and watching the racers earn points racing for their national or college teams. Local FIS athletes also helped to break in “All Out”, skiing on a regional RMD quota and gaining great experience with the NCAA racers. “All Out” received National and International exposure from racers around the world, and we are pleased to see it a success!

Cross Country

It’s a family affair

It is a trend that certainly runs throughout the SSWSC. When the initial sibling becomes part of a Club program and shows enthusiasm for it, they pull in their younger siblings. Some slide into the same program, while others may branch off to different programs.

In the Cross Country Program we have numerous relations training and racing together. The U20/18/16 group has four sets of brother/sister or sister/sister combinations at this time: twins- Kathleen and Finn O’Connell, Wyatt and Waverly Gebhardt, Tyler and Anna Terranova, Jordi and Katie Floyd.

This past weekend SSWSC hosted the C.U. Invitational and RMN JNQ XC races. The sibling pairs listed above, put together quite an impressive array of results, with Wyatt and Waverly Gebhardt each taking the top spot in their age group in one of each of the two races
