Steamboat Springs, CO (April 20, 2017): Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) is the United States Ski & Snowboard Association’s (USSA) 2017 “Club of the Year.” In 2016 the SSWSC was certified as a USSA “Gold” Club, and is proud to be receiving USSA’s Club of the Year award this year from among more than 380 USSA clubs across the country. The “Club of the Year” award is presented annually to one USSA club which has distinguished itself in providing direction to young athletes through high-level competition programs resulting in athletic success, and that represents the vision, mission and core values of the USSA.
In addition, the SSWSC was also awarded the 2017 USSA Alpine Club of the Year, Snowboarding Club of the Year, and Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Club of the Year awards. These programs are run by SSWSC Alpine Director Adam Chadbourne, SSWSC Snowboarding Director Tori Koski, and Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Director Todd Wilson. SSWSC Athletic Director Jon Nolting stated “We have some of the best leaders and coaches in the world in snow sports and it is nice to see a number of our staff and programs get the recognition they deserve.”
SSWSC has now received the “Club of the Year” award 4 times, and was last named Club of the Year by the USSA in 2007. Speaking about all four 2017 USSA awards, SSWSC executive director Jim Boyne said, “We are humbled and honored to receive these awards from the USSA; they are a testament to the terrific work that our team has accomplished and their commitment and passion to helping our athletes achieve their goals. Our boards of directors, staff, volunteer coaches, athletes, parents, community supporters and venue partners can all be proud of our collective success.”
SSWSC athletes and Olympians have always been a source of pride to the Steamboat Springs community and to the Steamboat Ski Area. “We congratulate the Winter Sports Club on being recognized with these prestigious awards,” said Rob Perlman, president and COO of Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “SSWSC’s award as USSA’s Club of the Year and the other accolades speak volumes to the tremendous success of the partnership we have between the club and the resort. We’re incredibly proud to be a part of this special recognition.”
USSA president and CEO, Tiger Shaw, says that the SSWSC continues to capitalize and improve on its historic and successful heritage. “The breadth and extraordinary quality of the SSWSC’s programs are unique, serving athletes from age 3 all the way up to the U.S. Ski Team in almost every snow sport discipline. The SSWSC and its athletes are clearly committed to excellence and have raised the bar both in terms of their programming and facilities, including the recent addition of their new alpine venue at Steamboat Ski Area.”
The awards will be presented to the SSWSC on May 11th in Park City, Utah at the USSA Congress annual Chairman’s Awards Dinner.
The SSWSC seeks to “Create Champions, on and off the Mountain” and provides training and youth development to approximately 1,000 athletes every year in the disciplines of Alpine, Cross Country, Freestyle, Freeskiing, Nordic Combined, Special Jumping, Telemark, Snowboard Freestyle, Alpine Snowboarding, Strength and Conditioning, Cycling, and Skateboarding.
