Nordic Combined

Twenty SSWSC Skiers Named to Colorado Ski Country USA All-Star Team
On Sunday, twenty skiers from the SSWSC will be officially named to the Colorado Ski Country USA All-Star Team at a luncheon at Winter Park. All-Stars are selected in the disciplines of alpine ski racing, freestyle skiing, ski jumping and nordic combined. There are around sixty total All-Stars named from across the state each year based on their top rankings nationally for their age groups. Headlining the list are returning All-Stars Jack Reich and Cole Puckett, who were named Colorado All-Star Athlete of the Year for 2018 and 2016, respectively. They are joined by alpine teammates Isabelle Washburn, Noah Riemenschneider, Nico Richeda, James Lahrman and Cooper Puckett. From ski jumping and nordic combined, Tess Arnone, Alexa Brabec, Annika Belshaw, Bennett Gamber, Canden Wilkinson, Erik Belshaw, Gunnar Gilbertson, Niklas Malacinski and Thomas Miller were named to the team. A strong group of freestyle skiers, Trudy Mickel, Kenzie Radway, Maggie Ryan and Landon Wendler, round out the SSWSC All-Star group. Colorado Ski Country USA has been recognizing and supporting the top athletes in Colorado for several decades now by providing Colorado Ski Country USA Gold Passes to the alpine and freestyle skiers that allows them to ski for free at all the Colorado Ski Country USA resorts. Vail Resorts also provides passes to the athletes. Congratulations, All-Stars!

Freeskiing

The freeskiing team took on it’s first fall air camp to park city last weekend.  We took a group of 9 athletes to make use of the trampoline and airbag facilities.  That both the COE and the UOP have to offer.  One of the trips highlights was our time on the 3 meter spring board at the South Summit pool,  it was fun and a different type of air that the team had to make adjustment to understand.  We enjoyed welcoming Anthony Mathey to our group, who was making some adjustment to his first park style transitions.  The Spiegel brothers also made some large steps by adding skis to tricks they have been working on in a trampoline setting.

Cycling

The High School MTB Team finished up their regular season in Eagle, CO last weekend with the North and South Divisional Championships. What looked to be a potentially horrible weather day turned out to be a bike racers dream; cool temps and tacky dirt. The course was fast and rolling, the colors peaking and the high peaks dusted in snow. The JV racers took off first in the coolest temperatures of the day, Cam Owens leading the charge for most of the race, but falling back to 3rd on the last lap after fighting a cold all week. Close behind were teammates Daniel Kempers and Alden Wade. The ladies took off next enjoying the rise in temperature and loving the tacky dirt on the notorious corkscrew banked turn descent. Reilly Mewborn and Elize Fox came in 10th and 11th for JV girls. The sophomore girls had a strong showing with Rose Epstein finishing 7th, Ryley Seibel 8th and Elena Wittemyer 16th. Freshman Liesel Wilkinson expressed how fun the course was and said she wanted to ride another lap.

Sophomore and Freshman boys raced 2 laps mid day in the very competitive and large fields. They all finished from 18th -84th out of 160 racers. Senior Matthew Kempers, Varsity Rider, had his toughest race yet. Not due to the 4 laps that was required, but the 2 flat tires while racing. After fixing both tire, Matthew persevered and finished the race riding the last lap alone.

Steamboat HS MTB Team qualified 17 riders to State Championships in Durango, CO in a week.

Alpine

The U16 Alpine Team volunteered on Thursday with the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council. Athletes worked to cut Willow Shoots, which will then be re-planted this weekend in an effort to re-stabilize a river bank and create more fish habitat on a section of the Yampa River.

Great Job, athletes!
