Freestyle

15-year-old SSWSC athlete Kenzie Radway received an invitation to participate in the World Cup circuit at Lake Placid! This is a huge accomplishment given her age!

In the same event, SSWSC athlete Jaelin Kauf also competed with a second place standing overall in World Cups; she had a chance to overtake Olympic Gold Medalist Perrine Laffont at the same time as Kenzie made her first World Cup debut. Jaelin finished 4th overall.

Freeskiing

We attended our first Contest of the season last weekend with a Halfpipe event at Copper mountain.  The rest of this month is light on the competition side with no more park events and the Snowbird camp and contest for the big mountain crew.  We are also hosting an IFSA u12 event this season here in Steamboat on the 27th of the month.  This event will be a great way for our older athletes to help introduce the sport that they love to the next generation of shredder.  Please Check out the Volunteer page here if your able to help out.

Here are some results and an update from the Copper Halfpipe this weekend.  We saw great riding and team work with the athletes as the kicked off their competitive season.  Cael put some time on his left 9 and Riley worked heavily her Flair both lading them in their runs while David and Owen worked on some technical ski work to generate amplitude, Wiley Wagner also had a strong week leading in to the event, but came up sick on the morning of the event so he was missed in the start gate.  Riley Jacobs and Liam Baxter will be heading to Switzerland in 2 weeks to represent the US at Jr Worlds.

Next Sunday the Freeskiing Team will be hosing a u12 Big Mountain event in Chute One.  Competitive big mountain skiing is a competition through a designated venue (cute one and the ridge) that rewards strong creative skiing and air emphasizing control.  This discipline has been growing over the last 5 years here in Steamboat and we are excited to dedicate an entire day to just the U12s.  All competitors must be able to ski chute one/ ridge in control, alone.

Big mountain events are judged on 5 criteria

• Line Choice: where you go
• Control:  do you display control
• Flow;  Does the run flow or are you stopping
• Technique;  Do you look like you know what your doing
• Style and Energy:  doe it look like you’re having fun

(also there is a 50% off for steamboat kids)  the Registration deadline is this Monday the 21st   If you have any questions please contact [email protected]

Nordic Combined

We placed 7 athletes this year on the Junior World Championship Team!! It’s a huge achievement for our Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined programs.

There were 15 total athletes selected in 4 categories: Men’s Ski Jumping, Women’s Ski Jumping, Men’s Nordic Combined, and Women’s Nordic Combined.  That means that almost half of them are from Steamboat!

Unfortunately two of our athletes got injured after the qualifiers and will not be able to participate, but they showed tremendous performances in the early season.  Bennett Gamber sustained a concussion a few weeks ago while competing in a Continental Cup in Klingenthal, Germany; and Annika Malacinski underwent surgery on her shoulder after she dislocated it during a training jump.  They are recovering quickly and looking forward to making even bigger competitions in the future!

Here’s a list of our SSWSC qualifiers:

Men’s Ski Jumping
• Decker Dean
• Canden Wilkinson

Women’s Ski Jumping
• Annika Belshaw

Men’s Nordic Combined
• Bennett Gamber
• Niklas Malacinski

Women’s Nordic Combined
• Tess Arnone
• Annika Malacinski

Snowboarding

Snowboard Pro-Am
The SSWSC snowboard race team just finished up a very busy month with 3 stops on the Nor-am tour, starting here at home on Howelsen Hill with a PGS and PSL, then off to Buck Hill in Minneapolis for 3 Noram PSL and a Junior FIS PSL, and then after a Christmas break Two PGS races and a junior FIS PGS at Le Relais in Quebec City Canada.
The big story this year has been Cody Winters, not only has he been on every podium (including junior races) and earned his first wins but he is now in the lead of the Noram Cup standings, this has been a break out year for him and we couldn’t be happier! Robby Burns also found the top spot of the podium at both Howelsen and Buck Hill with very fast riding. And new to the team this year is Jamie Behan from Ontario Canada who has been finding the podium a lot after thriving in our training environment and a big congratulations to him as well. And in the junior FIS race at Le Relais another new team member Nate True earned a 3rd place his first podium at this level standing next to Cody. On the ladies side at Howelsen Maggie Rose Carrigan grabbed a win in the slalom and third in GS, with Millie Bongiorno in second in the PGS and third in the slalom.
