We just finished up another Slopestyle comp here in Keystone yesterday (Feb 22), and it was another great one!!

Jackie Clemente - 14-15 yr old men - 3rd
Johnny Duty - Open Class men - 3rd

The results above help our athletes qualify for USASA Nationals that will take place in Copper at the end of this season. However, this particular Keystone competition was bit different, in that it was also part of the “World Rookie Tour” series. This series offers competitions all over the world and the points accumulated through these comps qualify athletes to a Finals in Austria. We don’t necessarily chase these events because the competitions and events we’re interested in are usually offered right in our backyard. Despite that, our athletes earned some points and more medals in the World Rookie Tour Series.

The park in Keystone is always one of our favorites. This year especially, it was uniquely fun and offered us a great training opportunity. There was a line of large jumps that the competition did not take place on, but we took full advantage of training on those while we were there.

Our next comp is coming up quickly in Copper. It will happen this coming Wednesday (Feb 26). It is a “Future’s Tour” competition, which means it’s the next tier up from what we have been doing. Only athletes ages 14 and up can participate and high-scorers will qualify for “Revolution Tour”, which is the next step towards Grand Prix’s and World Cups. Jackie Clemente, Jesse Hamric, Johnny Duty, and Marty Boyd will be representing SSWSC!

Freeskiing

This past week the SSWSC Big Mountain Freeride team was in Taos, New Mexico for an IFSA National Event. With over 150 athletes competing we had 4 Athletes qualify for finals: Kyler Armstrong, Maisie Wagner, Ella Pietras and Gage Adrian. Maisie and Ella put on a strong showing in finals with Ella Pietras placing 5th overall and 3rd for the day. Maisie Wagner won the Spirit of Freeride award for skiing a big challenging line. Due to weather the boys categories were not able to be run. Final results for the Boys were Kyler Armstrong 23rd and Gage Adrian 22nd.

Alpine

SSWSC Competes on Olympic Venues at Snowbasin for Junior National Championships

Sixteen SSWSC athletes competed in the U.S. Junior National Championships in Snowbasin, Utah, this week. It was an absolutely beautiful setting with great venues and very high level racing.

Riley Grosdidier started the week off strong with a 5th place finish in Super G. Sequoia Anstine was solid in 16th. Cole Gedeon moved up from bib 48 to finish 22nd, leading the guys. Bode Flanigan was just behind in 24th, Cam Owens 25th and James Lahrman finished 32nd.

In the GS, Riley had another strong result in 7th, impressive especially as a first-year FIS racer! Bella Amico shredded into 11th from the 31st start position, a very impressive result. On the men’s side, Noah Riemenschneider finished less than a tenth of a second off the podium, taking 4th behind three U.S. Ski Team members. Nick Unkovskoy was 14th overall, but the fastest U18 racer. Cam Owens was 17th overall and 4th U18, Cooper Puckett was 19th and the fastest first year FIS racer. Cam Smith, Bode Flanigan and Jordan Simon were 27th, 28th and 29th overall, and Kyle Kagan made a nice move from bib 56 to finish 36th.

Noah got onto the podium on the last day in the slalom, taking the silver medal. Cooper took 6th overall, Cam Owens took 12th and Jordan was 13th. Cam Smith had another solid result in 22nd and Cole Gedeon ripped it from bib 60 to finish 27th. For the women, Riley took 18th overall, Sequoia was 23rd, Bella 28th and Soneva Scott was 31st.

The men stayed in Snowbasin for two more days of NPS (National Performance Series) racing with the elite national field, and continued with some great results. In the GS, Nick was again the fastest U18, finishing 7th overall from bib 24. Cam Owens was just behind in 9th and Jordan took 29th. In the slalom, Cooper got on the overall podium as a first year FIS athlete, moving up from the 18th start position. Colton Sankey scored a top ten with his 9th place from the 24th start position.

U10
We have been able to go down extreme terrain this year, checking off one of our goals. We have also been slowly building up to going off side hits and jumps. We have also had help from other coaches and have done different activities that have pushed everyone out of their comfort zone. A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to work with Coach Tony, who was able to give some pointers on how to properly go off jumps in the terrain park. Then last week on Tuesday, the kids had the opportunity to go off the base of one of the nordic jumps onto the airbag. Both of these times pushed everyone out of their comfort zone! Plus not to mention, some of your kids got to participate in Winter Carnival where we skied down Howelson at night with torches in our hands!

Our season is almost coming to a wrap as we have three and a half weeks left of practice. As a team, we are going to make the most out of it and will be skiing as hard as we can.

Eleven SSWSC XC athletes have qualified for the 2020 XC Junior Nationals to be held at the Auburn Training Center, Donner Summit, CA. They earned their spot with top season long competitive point totals within the Rocky Mountain Nordic Race Series. The RMN Team will be bringing 52 athletes from 10 different Colorado clubs, to compete in the week-long event. Over 400 athletes from around the United States will compete.
