Congrats to Riley Jacobs and Liam Baxter who both competed in the US Ski and Snowboard Halfpipe Grand Prix at Copper Mountain last week.  This was a great experience for both athletes to get some time in the pipe with some of the best pipe riders in the world. For both athletes, this was their first Grand Prix!  This weekend they are competing in Copper Mountain at the Rev Tour!

High Performance:
The High Performance Team is making progress here at our training camp in Apex, British Columbia, Canada…

There is a full length course and we’re managing our training between our on snow component as well as gym sessions every afternoon. The team was just initially jumping at the beginning of camp starting at 7:30 in the morning. As there are many teams here training – it was the most efficient time to do so…the athletes have been mixing it up with other international teams including Canada and Japan…

Athletes in attendance: Kenzie Radway, Maggie Ryan, Bubba Antkiewicz, Landon Wendler and Spencer Belsky.

This camp is a prep period for the US Selection Event, (an event that has some US World Cup starts up for grabs for the top finishers). Team Steam is focused on the details of the process as they have their sights set on their personal best performances at this event.

Lars Johnson the Head Coach for the HP Mogul Group was injured in Zermatt Switzerland, (ruptured Achilles), and is on the mend feeling better every day! In the meantime Director Bobby Aldighieri is heading up the program and both Lars and Bobby will be heading to Winter Park for US Selections… “this is a mature group of athletes that are very detailed oriented, we believe that when we take care of the process and the exacting detail of that process we put ourselves in a good position when it comes to championship type events. Let’s see how our progress continues. We have to keep our heads down and do the work day to day”.

U15’s:
With two mogul courses already built at Howelsen Hill, the U15s have had the luxury of training on moguls like they’ll see in competition. Being able to work on absorption, edging, ankle flexion and shin pressure in the bumps, the athletes are well ahead of last season at this time. It’s not all focused training though, ripping around in the bumps and powder on Mt. Werner has provided awesome stance and balance awareness as well as many jumping opportunities. The athletes are off to a fantastic start and are looking forward to their first competition, here in Steamboat on January 12.

Cross Country

Nordic Council Howelsen Team Sprint
The Steamboat Nordic Council is a non for profit organization aimed at supporting and enhancing Cross Country skiing and racing opportunities in our community. They are responsible for the excellent early season skiing on Bruce’s Trail, Rabbit Ears Pass. They also organize three races over the course of the year: 10k at 10,000 feet running race, the Howelsen Team Sprint, and the Rabbit Ears Ski Marathon. This past Saturday a buzz of eager racers lined up in the Howelsen Rodeo Arena to compete in the Howelsen Team Sprint. there were approximately 50 teams participating, with ages spanning 7 years old to 70 years old. Many competitors were SSWSC Nordic athletes and their parents. A real diverse group indeed. Each team member skied a 1k or 1.5k lap, tagging off to their teammate, until 6 laps were completed. This is the same format seen at World Championship and Olympic events. It was great to see the enthusiasm and spirit of competition displayed by all involved.
