Alpine Team
Alpine Athlete Laiken Roth brings home podium finish at Chilean National Championships
Four alpine ski athletes traveled last month to Corralco, Chile, for the South American Cup Series and the Chilean National Championships, Jonah Fleischer, Aksel Kitt, Laiken Roth, and Roman Elvidge. The trip was focused on speed training, primarily downhill. The athletes skied 800m (2500 feet per one run) of vertical in the downhill training and super g training sessions. They also had the opportunity to train with the Austrian Men’s Europa Cup Speed Team, the Andorran Jr. National Team, and a club from Trysil, Norway. Athletes participated in technical and speed events, slalom, giant slalom, downhill, and super g. The team raced in three downhill races, one super g race, one giant slalom, one alpine combined (super g and slalom), and one slalom. Laiken Roth had outstanding performances with a 2nd place podium finish in the alpine combined and a 6th place in the super g. Afternoons included soccer games with the Chilean and Argentine athletes and lots of homework, ski tuning, video, and an occasional nap. Coach Chad Fleischer was excited about taking these athletes down for the trip. “I have heard about Corralco for years from Johno McBride (former Men’s Downhill Head Coach for the U.S. Ski Team), and because of the pandemic, it was not an option to travel to Chile. This year we decided to see what it had to offer, and there is no doubt it lived up to the hype.”
Cross Country
Cross Country Athlete Trey Jones attends National Training Group Camp in Utah
Cross country skier Trey Jones attended the National Training Group (NTG) camp this past week, qualifying based on two 2nd place finishes at the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships in January. Trey also qualified for the Cross Country U18 Nordic Nations Championships last winter, but the U.S. Ski Team canceled the trip due to Covid.
The NTG dryland camp in Park City, UT, includes athletes from age 16 through the senior/elite ranks allowing Trey to train with top members of the U.S. Ski Team, including Jessie Diggins. SSWSC alumni Wally Magill was also invited to the camp but turned it down in favor of attending class at Dartmouth College, where he skis at the NCAA level. Other SSWSC alums taking part in the camp included Finn O’Connell, Noel Keeffe, and Simon Zink. The end of the week culminates with two rollerski races at Soldier Hollow—the 2002 Olympic venue. The races are unique because they use “matched” rollerskis, meaning everyone is on the same brand of skis with the same wheels. This type of racing is perhaps fairer than actual ski racing and is commonplace in Europe and New England. Four members of the current SSWSC cross country will travel this weekend to participate in the rollerski races along with Trey Jones, including Henry Magill, Charley Lodwick, and Tristan Thrasher. Trey also participated in these same races last fall. Congratulations to Trey, and good luck to the team this weekend.
