Alex Deibold joins SSWSC as Snowboard Program Director

Alex Deibold joins Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club as Snowboard Program Director

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has announced Alex Deibold will join the team as Snowboard Program Director. Deibold will replace the position held by Maddy Schaffrick, who stepped down on December 1, 2022, to work for U.S. Ski & Snowboard as assistant coach of the U.S. Snowboard Pro Halfpipe Team. Deibold brings a lifetime of experience in snowboarding and a passion for the role sport plays in developing people and community. He was a bronze medalist in snowboardcross at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and retired from his professional career at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Deibold will move to Steamboat with his wife and daughter and start on July 1, 2023.

Born and raised in New England, Alex found his passion for snowboarding at an early age in the mountains of Vermont. He competed professionally in every discipline of the sport before narrowing his focus on snowboardcross. He was named to the U.S. Snowboard Team in 2004. During Alex’s 19-year tenure on the team, he stood on numerous World Cup podiums, captured multiple national titles, and won a bronze medal in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. As an avid outdoorsman, he loves cycling, golfing, and flyfishing and has worked with Protect Our Winters for over a decade to protect the places and experiences he loves.

“My first interaction with SSWSC was during a prep camp for Junior Worlds in the early 2000s, I can still remember how blown away I was by how much fun we had simply riding the mountain - sure, we didn’t have pow days like that back on the east coast, but I’ll never forget what an impression that week had on me. I’m beyond excited to join the Steamboat community and contribute to helping continue the club’s storied legacy, both on and off the mountain.”
“Alex’s lifelong experience in the sport through all levels, particularly his two decades training, competing, and traveling as a member of the U.S. snowboardcross team, have given him a wealth of knowledge and perspective he will bring to the SSWSC program,” said SSWSC Athletic Director Dave Stewart, “Alex stood out among a strong pool of candidates for his clear understanding of the athlete development pathways. I look forward to working closely with Alex to build upon Steamboat’s snowboarding tradition, providing both outstanding grassroots programming and progression to the highest levels of the sport.”

Please join us in welcoming Alex and his family to SSWSC.
