Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament

Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament

The Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament is Steamboat’s longest-held golf tournament, now hosted in memory of Olympian Moose Barrows. All proceeds from this tournament go to the Moose Barrows Athletic Achievement Scholarships at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Moose envisioned the Athletic Achievement Scholarship to ensure that Steamboat kids who have achieved the top levels in their winter sport can afford to travel to championship-level events without undue financial hardship.

Thank you to everyone who came out and played on September 18, 2024, to support Moose and his legacy. Congratulations to Boyd Birdies for the team win, to Slopeside for hosting our after-party, B&K Distributing for hosting our in-round beverages and providing prizes, and Rollingstone for hosting the golf! Thanks again to Reese Hillard for generously sponsoring our hats and to Steamboat Ski Resort and Northland Skis for prizes. Kudos to all the volunteers for helping make it a fun day!

Thanks to our hole sponsors this year whose contribution will help establish the Moose Barrows Memorial Scholarship Fund - Cam Boyd and Pam Vanatta, Fleischer Sport, Alpine Mountain Ranch & Club, Downtown Conoco, Bob and Dell Ann Sathe, Truffle Pig, GB Design Build, Schmiggity’s, and Edward Jones. Read more about the fund below and how to donate.

We look forward to seeing you at next year’s tournament!

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Moose Barrows Memorial Scholarship Fund

As many of his close friends, family, and colleagues know supporting young athletes in Steamboat was one of his passions.

A native of Steamboat Springs, Moose relied on help from members of the Steamboat Springs community to support him when he was on the national team, so Moose, along with two friends, Paul Thayer, and Hank Kashiwa, wanted to host a golf tournament that would bring in funding from Steamboat and around the country to create a youth scholarship fund to support young Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes. These funds ensure that future local high-potential athletes receive the same level of community support that Moose received when he was young. The funds will also help young athletes take part in programming, training, travel, and competitions that they may not otherwise be able to afford. Since its inception 45 years ago, the tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support young athletes. The Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament will be hosted annually in his honor and will continue to raise funds to help young athletes.

To sustain Moose’s legacy, specifically this scholarship funding, SSWSC is working with the Barrows family and Moose’s many friends, teammates, and colleagues to establish a dedicated fund within the SSWSC endowment to support scholarships in perpetuity. The fund and the annual golf tournament will create sustainable funding for the Moose Barrows Athletic Achievement Scholarships to support young athletes for years to come. Young Steamboat athletes will continue to make him proud and represent his spirit of excellence.
