Freeski and Snowboard Athletes Charge Through Tough Conditions at IFSA Comp at Arapahoe Basin
SSWSC freeski and snowboard athletes traveled to Summit County on Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12 to compete in the A-Basin IFSA Junior 2 events. On the morning of the event, athletes were met with a very icy and chunky West Zuma Bowl venue. Conditions improved through the day each day, with the final riders of the day getting softer conditions to send the drops bigger and ski faster.
At Monday’s event, snowboarders started the day with SSWSC athlete Calvin Lieberman dropping in second on his way to a fourth-place finish in the U15 field. In the U19 male snowboard field, Mason Kemp shredded his way into second place. Moving into Monday, Lainee Haack secured 6th in the U15 female skiers with a super clean run. In the U15 male skier field, Branigan Murphy brought home the gold and Robbie Wodnick the silver with hard-charging trick-filled runs down the venue. Ridge Barnes joined his teammates in the top ten with an 8th-place finish. In the U19 male skiers, Gavin Murphy secured 5th place with two huge 360’s.
On Tuesday, SSWSC athletes were the first to drop into the West Zuma venue. U15 female skiers Molly Grady, Seva Jonathans, and Reagan Farrell ripped turns and caught air down the icy venue to finish in 3rd, 4th, and 6th, respectively. With still an icy venue and a huge field size, Oscar Dalzell ripped a huge line full of technical skiing and air time to finish in second place.
