Ann West, Head Women's U16 Coach

Ann West, Head Women's U16 Coach

Ann was born and raised in the Swiss Alps, where her passion for skiing grew and her desire to speed down the hill increased each year as she explored her home resort, Les Portes du Soleil. To get the best of both education and skiing, she enrolled at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont in 2002, where she found her talent for Downhill racing.  Upon graduating, she joined the SSWSC to get more speed training. As she improved and got closer to her goal, she decided to move to Austria to live with the British National Team and get a new perspective and opinion of her skiing from her Austrian coaches. With them, she found the missing link that brought it all together, and reached the highlights of her career. She would have continued pursuing her goals to make the U.S. Ski Team and the Olympics, however her education was just as important to secure her future. With that in mind, she enrolled in and attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.  There, she became a two-sport athlete and participated in both skiing and crew (rowing).  Through the years, her varied teams and sports, she learned the values of team work, and respect for her teammates, coaches, and teachers. Her joy and passion for skiing has yet to be quenched however, and she immediately contacted the club seeking employment as a coach. Recently, she spent a few years coaching in Switzerland, returning to the SSWSC U16 program to coach in 2021.

He believes in leading by example; teaching his athletes to become “complete” endurance athletes that can participate and be competitive in a multitude of sports is a priority.

Retiring from teaching in 2019 with 25 years of teaching experience at Steamboat Springs Middle School, her passion for kids continues. Lara and her husband Brad raised their children in Steamboat Springs, but their kids grew up at the Winter Sports Club.  As a parent of two former SSWSC athletes (Jack – Freestyle; Emily – Alpine), she and her husband have supported the club’s vision for the last 20+ years. Although both of her children have graduated from high school and are finding their way at college and in the world, Lara cannot imagine a time in their lives when they weren’t volunteering at Howelsen Hill, traveling the distances for a ski race or competition, and cheering for our athletes on the side of a ski slope. If it takes a village to raise a child, then the Winter Sports Club was integral to her children’s upbringing. Now that both children are off creating their own journeys, she devotes her time and expertise to the growth of current and future students and SSWSC athletes on and off the slopes.

Sam House, Fitness and Equipment Specialist

Sam comes to the team after over a decade working in the outdoor industry. Practicing as a retail bootfitter he gained the knowledge and experience to help athletes get the most out of their equipment. Working as a certified personal trainer Sam has sought to help clients move more effectively, prevent injuries and recover faster when they happen. By bringing these skills together with his love of the outdoors and passion for coaching, he hopes to help all athletes get the most out of whatever activity they are pursuing.

When not sliding on snow, you will find Sam enthusiastically pursuing many activities, but you will rarely find him sitting still. Whether racing sailboats on the Great Lakes, going for a town run on his SUP in the spring runoff, or trying to beat his friends’ Strava times on Emerald, Sam is typically staying active. If he’s not moving, he’s probably working on one of his two other favorite activities, either cooking or eating. Athletes or parents with questions on bootfitting, human movement/mobility or just a recipe to share should feel free to reach out to Sam.
