Congratulations to all who competed in this weekends RQS/Devo Moguls comp! It was awesome to have such a large contingent from Team Steam, and so much fun to watch every kid put their best run out there. Some of our athletes really stepped it up under a little pressure, but most importantly everyone had fun on the hill with their teammates and enjoyed the events of the day. HUGE thanks to all of the parent volunteers for helping out with the details of this competition - without your efforts, we would not be able to make events like this happen!

This past weekend, in Minturn, Colorado, site of Vail Ski and Snow Board Club’s Nordic Trail System, 14 SSWSC XC athletes qualified for USSA Cross Country Junior Nationals. The national event will take place March 7th to 12th in Cable, Wisconsin- host of the annual AmericanBirkebeiner Marathon Ski Race. SSWSC athletes will be part of a 44 athlete team from Colorado. There will be 11 regional teams representing the United States- from New England to Alaska.

Freeskiing

The SSWSC Freeskiing Team competed in a Pipe event this weekend at Copper Mountain.  This event Saw Liam Baxter take 2nd in Skier boys 13 - 15 on the strength of his first hit Left 900.  Riley Jacobs found her way back into a 22ft Pipe for the first time since her concussion a about a month ago with a 3rd in Girls 10- 12.  She showed a lot of courage working on her Right 540.  This was also the first USASA Event and first time in a 22ft pipe for Sean Boyne who Skied very well, improving his skiing through the weekend.  Any time an athlete heads into a 22 for the first time its intimidating and he handled it with great confidence.

Alpine

U19 Athletes
This last weekend, we had two groups out on two different trips. Four boys headed down to Red River, NM with coaches Ryan and Mike. Nick Santaniello and Jett Seymour picked up right where they left off in Jackson wish some very solid skiing the first day, cracking into the top
30 with some smokin’ 2nd runs. Devin DeJong and Zak Kjos followed suit, finishing just out of the top 30 with some great skiing, but a few costly mistakes. The second day didn’t bode as well with the group, but Jett showed some consistency cracking into the top 30 once again. This was a college level race (University of New Mexico Invite) with some of the best skiers in the country and we’re very proud of the skiing that these boys brought to this race.

While that group was in New Mexico, The rest of the team was in Winter Park for the Surefoot GS and SL races with coaches Eric and Noah. This was an exciting race weekend and we saw some wonderful skiing out of many individuals and some blazing fast runs. In the GS’s, Will McConnell cut his bib in half, moving up from 36 to 17 with Sebastian Mastor just missing the top 30. On the women’s side, Serina Kidd picked up where she left off in Jackson, finishing in 5th with Mary Kate Hackworthy right on her heels in 6th overall (3rd for U19s) after starting from the 33rd position with a career best result and the 2nd fastest first run! Jazzy Lynch notched in a top 20 as well on the day with two very solid runs.

In the SL’s, after a little trouble in the first run, Patrick Gruber laid down the 2nd fastest run on the second run, moving him up into 11th for the day and a career best SL result. Zach Mikkelson also continued on his success in Jackson, with Sebastian Mastor not too far behind, both racing to their best results to date! On the women’s side, we had a few athletes lined up in the first run in the top ten, but the nature of slalom took over and they couldn’t hang on to stay in. Ellese Lupori ended up 12th, followed up by Jazzy Lynch in 16th. Maddy Smith and Mary Kate Hackworthy rounded out the top 30 and Maddy Boucher just outside of it.

As a staff, we were very, very excited of the racing this past weekend from both groups. The athletes are skiing with confidence, determination, and purpose, and the skill sets that they all possess are really starting to shine through, which ultimately leads to speed and fast ski racing! Keep firing away everybody!!

This past week, the U14 SSWSC “Team Grizzly” Alpine racers attended the Prater Cup in Crested Butte. Athletes braved the hard snow and crazy weather in the SG training and racing days to speed down the mountain for top speed! The GS entailed a “long” and “sprint” course, where athletes were tested on various elements of their technique, and the slalom race included some fun and challenging course sets that tested tactics, agility, and focus!

Along with racing, SSWSC athletes competed in SkillsQuest, where the team earned four top-10 finishes for both the men and women. Steamboat’s own Molly Mueller won for the women, and Cooper Puckett won for the men. Nico Richeda, who finished 2nd for the men, came out to complete SkillsQuest on Friday despire suffering bad shin bang from a Super-G crash the day before! Great Job persevering Nico! Other top-10 finishers for Steamboat included Bode Flanigan (9th), Alden Wade (10th), Ryli Adrian (4th), Emi Cooper (7th), and Marissa Drobek (8th). Way to show off your skills!

Competitors also earned Prater Points all week through generosity, helping course crew with b-nets, or satisfying their caffeine intake with coffee! The top Prater Point gatherers were rewarded, and Steamboat’s Nicole Nolting won for the most points earned aside from race results, and Steamboat’s own Bode Flanigan won the most Prater Points including race results. As well, Steamboat’s own Emily Craig won the Sportsmanship Award for disqualifying herself in the first SL race, as she straddled a gate and nobody knew it except her.

After Prater Cup, the Rocky Division named their Junior Championship team to compete in Winter Park from March 15th-19th. SSWSC Team Grizzly athletes invited Molly Mueller, Ryli Adrian, Emi Cooper, Ella Pietras, Emily Craig, Cooper Puckett, Marat Washburn, Cole Gedeon, Nico Richeda, Leo Davies, & Bode Flanigan.

Next up…Team Grizzly members will train at home and athletes not attending Junior Championships will be attending the Council Cup at Ski Cooper from March 3rd thru 5th! Keep shredding SSWSC U14 Alpine!

U10 Athletes
The U10 and AMP programs have been focusing on their short turns and mogul skiing lately. A few members competed in the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Devo Mogul event Sunday on Bashor. The next competition some will choose to go to is the Alpine U10 Championships in Telluride. For all U10/AMP athletes, we will host a USSA Skills Quest assessment Steamboat Cup on March 5. Each skier will perform a set of skills and be graded on those skills throughout the day. This will give each skier a foundation of where improvements can be made.

The U8 and U8+ groups are winding down for the season. This coming Saturday will be our last Saturday on the big mountain. Saturday March 5 will be a festive day over at Howelsen Hill with a treasure hunt and duals to round out the great season.

Some U10 ladies competed in the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Devo competition in Steamboat on Sunday. They spent the day with coach Deb Armstrong slaying the mogul course and practicing their spread Eagles. It was a fun day for all!
