The Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic, hosted by Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, kicked off this week on December 18 and 19 with two days of giant slalom racing on Steamboat Ski Resort and continuing Friday, December 20, with the iconic night slalom on Howelsen Hill and day slalom on Saturday, December 21. The weather and course conditions were perfect for both days of racing at Steamboat Ski Resort; the energy was high, and the course was fast. SSWSC alumnae Tatum Grosdidier and SSWSC athlete Jeremy Nolting post stellar results in the hometown races.

SSWSC alum and former Snowboard Director Maddy Schaffrick earned a 3rd place podium at the World Cup at the Secret Garden halfpipe competition in China on December 8, 2024. Schaffrick earned a World Cup spot last season from her stellar performance at the NorAm Cup last March in Aspen/Snowmass. This was Schaffrick’s first time competing at the World Cup level since 2015.

TeamSteam took advantage of the first mogul course in the country by not only getting some early season training but also hosting the first mogul event in the country. With the collaborative efforts of the City of Steamboat Springs and SSWSC, Howelsen Hill face presented a fantastic and challenging training and competition venue for our athletes. On Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 the best U16 and older ski jumping and Nordic combined athletes in North America competed in the first event of the 2024-2025 season, hosted by Rocky Mountain Division (RMD) and Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. This competition on Saturday was is the U.S. Cup opener and the first of two Junior World Championship Team tryouts. Steamboat athletes dominated with strong podium places on both days, with Arthur Tirone and Ella Wilson winning the Nordic Combined events.

Fifty ski jumping and nordic combined athletes participated in the SSWSC's annual Mini-Camp last week for four days of plastic jumping. SSWSC and Park City Ski & Snowboard SJ/NC athletes, U10-U18, participated in the camp which included six sessions of jumping between Thursday and Sunday.

Three SSWSC cross-country athletes traveled to beautiful Midway, Utah, for roller ski races at the Schutzenski Festival at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center for two days of racing starting October 18, 2024, Antigone Loomis, Sophia McGinnis Smith, and Maia McGinnis Smith. Top athletes from around the country showed up for the 10k classic race on Friday and the skate sprint race on Saturday.

The Colorado High School Cycling League State Championship took place last weekend on the grounds of Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, October 19 – 20, 2024. Twenty-four riders from Steamboat Springs competed in the event, with a total of 932 riders competing. The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team placed second in Division 2, just behind Durango, with a total of 23 teams competing for the Division 2 title. Steamboat’s weekend was capped off with a win in the Team Spirit Award—for the second time in two years, thanks to their lively participation in the disco-themed spirit competition.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club was represented in force last weekend at the 2024-2025 US National Championships in Lake Placid, New York. Fifteen Rocky Mountain Division athletes—six current SSWSC members, Ella Wilson, Haley Brabec, Sawyer Graves, Arthur Tirone, and Ethan Maines and ten alumni Annika Belshaw, Erik Belshaw, Alexa Brabec, Decker Dean, Estella Hassrick, Niklas Malacinski, Jason Colby, Gunnar Gilbertson, Erik Lynch, Annika Malacinski (did not start), competed on the HS100 and HS128 for the title of National Champion.

The ski jumping nordic combined crew embarked on a memorable journey last week to Fox River Grove, Illinois, for an enriching training experience and two days of thrilling competitions at the Norge Ski Club Jumptoberfest October 5-6, 2024. SSWSC had 19 athletes, from U10s to U16s, and three coaches traveled to Norge. The team was fortunate to have some excellent Midwest fall weather. SSWSC definitely showed up and proved to everyone that all their hard training had paid off. This competition is also a very fun event for athletes, as they jump in front of large crowds of people from all around the Chicago area to watch kids fly through the air.

The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike team competed in the fourth race of The Colorado High School Cycling League at the North Fruita Desert Classic on Sunday, October 6, in Fruita, Colorado. Steamboat riders continued to showcase their skills across all categories and finished second place in Division 2 in the final race of the Yampa Division before the State Championships. On Wednesday, October 9, The Colorado High School Cycling League announced the list of athletes who will represent their regions at the Colorado High School Cycling League State Championships at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, October 19 – 20, 2024, and twenty-eight Steamboat Springs High School Mountain Bike Team athletes secured their spots to compete.

SSWSC snowboard athlete Walker Overstake has earned a FIS World Cup start in snowboard parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom for the 2024-2025 season. This will be his first opportunity to compete in a World Cup event, a spot he secured after a strong season on the NorAm circuit. He is currently ranked 2nd in the U.S. for Alpine Snowboarding on the 2024-2025 base points list, which secured his quota spot for the FIS World Cup.

The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team continued to show impressive young talent at the third race of the 2024 Colorado High School Cycling League series Saturday in Eagle, Colorado, at the Haymaker Classic. The team secured the Division 2 title and earned the highly sought-after Spirit Award, with this week's race theme celebrating neon. The girls' team once again delivered standout performances. Freshman Sydney Soard, the current points leader, maintained her top standing with a commanding first-place finish. Allie Reznicek placed 2nd in the sophomore race, and Whitney Warnke took 3rd in the JV race.

Steamboat Springs Winter Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club announced today 25 athletes and alumni have been named to U.S. National Teams. Six current SSWSC athletes and 19 SSWSC alumni were named to alpine, cross country, freeski, freestyle/moguls, ski jumping, nordic combined, snowboard halfpipe, snowboard cross, and teams. SSWSC is the only club in the nation with athletes named to all seven national teams.

The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike team took home three top-three finishes, multiple top-10 finishes, and 2nd place in Division 2 at the first race of The Colorado High School Cycling League race series on Saturday, August 24, at the Frisco Bay Invitational in Frisco, Colorado. 415 racers competed in the Yampa Division race on Saturday – 29 riders from Steamboat High School and Steamboat Mountain School. Riders raced two or three laps of a 5.9-mile course, including a mix of singletrack, double track, and dirt roads. Sydney Soard took the win for the freshman girls, with 37 girls racing. Allie Reznicek was second in the sophomore girls' race, and Whitney Warnke was 2nd place in the junior varsity (JV) girls’ race and many other top-ten finishes.

Four SSWSC U16 Alpine Team athletes—Logan Grosdidier, Caley Goforth, Bella Fisher, and Mathew Kafka — qualified to compete in the U16 National Championship in Vail, Colorado, from March 31 to April 4. After a week of racing, Logan Grosdidier emerged as the undisputed victor, taking home gold in all four timed events and seventh in the SkillsQuest Assessment.

Athletes from SSWSC ranged in age from 7 to 26 and competed in halfpipe, slopestyle, rail jam, boardercross, slalom, or giant slalom from March 30 to April 4, 2024, at Copper Mountain. Madden Matuga was 1st place overall Nationals Champ for Ruggie Boys (7-8), Bridger Eavenson was 7th overall for Ruggie Boys (7-8), and Summit Lynch was 6th overall for Menehune Boys (11-12).

A group of U16 alpine athletes headed to beautiful Crested Butte to compete in the U16 R/C Showdown, March 7- 10. Twenty-four eager athletes, U10 through U16, made the trip to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 Western Regional Championships. Six athletes from the U17 Team Steam headed to Telluride over the weekend to take on the Southwest Classic. Beautiful, jagged peaks and blue skies met the athletes as they bumped down Hermit, pushing their speed and jumps. U.S. Alpine Ski Team Member and SSWSC athlete Roman Elvidge won the Western Region Elite Alpine Race Series giant slalom race on Monday, February 19, on Snow King Mountain in Jackson, Wyoming. Teammate Ian Haupt was also on the podium in 3rd place. On Tuesday, February 20, Ian Haupt was on the podium again for the giant slalom in 2nd place, and teammate Colin Kagan was 3rd.
