Additional Scholarships

Additional Scholarships

SSWSC offers several scholarships in addition to our EZ Scholarships, Winter Program Scholarships, and Summer Camp Scholarships. These scholarships range from need-based and community involvement to athletic and academic achievement.

Thanks to our generous donors, SSWSC awarded nearly $450,000 in financial need-based and athletic achievement scholarships in 2023-2024, providing opportunities for local athletes to participate in programs at any level.

The Neville Family Scholarship

The Neville Scholarship is awarded each spring to deserving Routt/Moffat County SSWSC graduating seniors to help cover college expenses. The funds are made available through a donation from Steamboat locals, the Neville Family.

Available Scholarships

The following are short descriptions of SSWSC Scholarships available throughout the year. Full descriptions, eligibility, and application deadlines are posted HERE when the application opens.

Athletic Achievement Scholarship
Funds for the Athletic Achievement Scholarships are generated by the Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament as well as other private donations. This scholarship is for SSWSC athletes age 13 or older who qualify for a National Championship or Junior Nationals. The application period begins in February and awards are made in March.
Carl’s Cup Scholarship
The Carl’s Cup Scholarship is for SSWSC male or female athletes aged 11 to 16 years in any discipline who are currently active in the SSWSC programs and participating in out-of-town competitive events. This scholarship is funded by local businesses, corporations, and life-long ski racers through their participation and/or donations to the Carl’s Cup Scholarship Race Series.  This scholarship aims to provide an opportunity for young athletes to participate in out-of-town races and help ease the financial burden for the families of these athletes. Applications open in January and awards are made in February.

The Clint Devin Memorial Scholarship

The Clint Devin Memorial Scholarship was founded through a partnership of Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute and the Devin family to memorialize Dr. Clint Devin’s tremendous contribution to spine surgery. The scholarship supports college-bound high school seniors or postgraduates who are or were active members of the SSWSC through high school and are pursuing an undergraduate education toward a career in the medical field.

Joe and Sara Bishop Winter Carnival Grand Marshal Memorial Scholarship

Joe and Sara Bishop have been passionate about SSWSC and the athletes ever since their sons Hunter and Phillip skied with the club. Over the past 20 years, they generously contributed to numerous fundraising events and SSWSC projects. Two $2,000 scholarships are awarded annually to SSWSC student-athletes ages 12-18 in honor of Joe and Sara Bishop at the Winter Carnival Opening Ceremony.

Barbara Bolding/Jim Grew Snow Ski Scholarship

The Barbara Bolding/Jim Grew Snow Ski Scholarship for SSWSC Female Collegiate Skiing Graduates was established by Jim Grew to honor his deceased partner Barbara Bolding. This scholarship is awarded each year to a SSWSC female alumna who has completed her skiing at the collegiate level to be applied toward future academic expenses. This scholarship of $5,000 is awarded to the skier who best represents high achievement in academics (30%), sport (30%) and community service/volunteerism while at SSWSC and through her college experience (20%) as well as need (20%). Application period is in May, awards made in June.

Lobos Ronin Scholarship

Thanks to the generous support of the Lobos Ronin Fund, the Lobos Ronin scholarship is available exclusively for snowboard athletes who apply for a Winter Program Fee Scholarship. Snowboard athletes who apply for the Winter Program Fee Scholarship will be automatically eligible for consideration for these additional funds. The additional financial support is a testament to the Lobos Ronin Fund’s commitment to nurturing talent, helping individuals pursue their passion for snowboarding. This scholarship aims to ease the family budget pressures that may come with pursuing competition and travel opportunities.

Bill Michalek Scholarship

The Bill Michalek Scholarship is awarded twice a year (spring and fall) to an athlete in any SSWSC program between the age 13 and 18 years old. The scholarship fund was established in 1997 to provide funding to a deserving middle or high school student from Routt County with financial need who is involved in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Financial need, athletic achievement and community involvement will be considered. The $2500 scholarship will be used to help cover travel and program expenses.

Neville Family Scholarship

The Neville Family Scholarship is awarded each spring to deserving Routt/Moffat County SSWSC graduating seniors to help cover college expenses. The funds are made available through a donation from Steamboat locals, the Neville Family.

The Nick Would Foundation Scholarship

The Nick Would Foundation Scholarship is awarded annually to athletes in the freeskiing program between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. Established in 2023, the scholarship fund provides financial support to deserving middle or high school students from Routt County with financial need who are involved in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and excel in the big mountain discipline. Financial need, athletic achievement, compassion for others, and a solid moral character are the criteria for this award. The freeskiing athlete who applies for this scholarship must complement the mission of the Nick Would Foundation and demonstrate the qualities Nick brought to the SSWSC – integrity, passion, gratitude, community, and deep appreciation for outdoor pursuits Freeski athletes who meet this criteria may apply for these scholarship funds through SSWSC’s need-based and merit-based scholarship process. This new scholarship will open fall of 2024.
